What the HSK exam tests
The hsk examination measures Chinese as a foreign language in listening, reading and, from the middle levels, writing and speaking. In the current NewHSK, levels 1 to 6 cover beginner to advanced learners and levels 7 to 9 are the top band.
How the HSK exams differ by level
HSK exams grow in length and difficulty with each level. The table below uses the official sample papers.
- HSK 1 (A1): 40 questions, listening and reading, about 32 minutes
- HSK 2 (A2): 60 questions, writing, listening and reading, about 56 minutes
- HSK 3 (B1): 85 questions, writing, speaking, listening and reading, about 88 minutes
- HSK 4 (B2): 75 questions, writing, speaking, listening and reading, about 95 minutes
- HSK 5 (C1): 77 questions, writing, speaking, listening and reading, about 123 minutes
- HSK 6 (C2): 87 questions, speaking, listening, reading and writing, about 138 minutes
How to prepare for the HSK Chinese proficiency test
The hsk chinese proficiency test rewards regular practice. Find your level, learn the word list for it, practise the grammar in sentences and take a full mock exam every week or two. Review every mistake by section.
Choosing when to take the exam
Take the real exam when your mock scores are comfortably above the pass mark two or three times in a row. Book early: test centres fill up.

Which HSK level should I take?
Choose the level after the last one you can pass comfortably. The free level test gives a good starting point.
Is the HSK exam hard?
It depends on the level. HSK 1 and 2 are for beginners; from HSK 4 the exam expects real fluency.
How long is the certificate valid?
HSK certificates are commonly treated as valid for two years, but check the requirement of the institution asking for it.
