What Is the HSK Level Test?
The HSK (汉语水平考试) is China's official Chinese language proficiency exam, recognised worldwide by universities and employers. There are six levels — HSK 1 (beginner) to HSK 6 (near-native). This free diagnostic test helps you understand which level you're currently at, so you can focus your study.
Our Chinese proficiency test covers vocabulary recognition, character reading, and grammar across all six HSK bands. It's not an official exam, but it's an excellent starting point for learners wondering "what is my HSK level?"

Frequently Asked Questions
▸ Is this an official HSK exam?
No. This is a free diagnostic tool to estimate your level. To obtain an official certificate, you must sit an authorised HSK examination at a registered test centre. This test is for self-assessment and study planning only.
▸ How accurate is the Chinese proficiency test?
The questions are carefully aligned to the official HSK syllabus. The test is a reliable indicator of your approximate level, but because it is shorter than the real exam (30 vs 100+ questions), treat the result as a starting point rather than a definitive score.
▸ What is the difference between HSK 3 reading and general HSK 3?
The HSK 3 examination has three sections: listening, reading, and writing. HSK 3 reading specifically tests your ability to understand written passages, match sentences, and fill in blanks at an intermediate level (600-word vocabulary).
▸ Can I take the test more than once?
Absolutely — it's completely free. You can retake it as many times as you like to track your progress.
▸ What is HSK 5 writing like?
HSK 5 writing requires you to write an essay of around 80 characters on a given topic, demonstrating advanced grammar, complex sentence structures, and a vocabulary of 2,500+ words. Our practice tests include HSK 5 writing samples to help you prepare.
▸ What is the HSK meaning?
HSK stands for 汉语水平考试 (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì), which translates as "Chinese Language Proficiency Examination". It is the standardised test of Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers, administered by Hanban (now the Chinese International Chinese Education Foundation).
▸ I got HSK 3 — what should I study next?
Congratulations! At HSK 3, focus on expanding your vocabulary to 1,200 words (the HSK 4 target), practise complex grammar patterns like 把 and 被 sentences, and improve your reading speed with graded readers. HSK Tutor has targeted flashcard decks and mock exams for every level.
